India Kawasaki Motors Goes Solo With New Plant In Chakan

The 8-year old alliance between Bajaj Auto and India Kawasaki Motors (IKM) that covered sales and aftersales services for Kawasaki motorcycles ended April 01 of this year. Bajaj pro-biking showrooms have increasingly been converted as Kawasaki dealer after KTM’s entry to India through the 200 Duke model in 2012.

India Kawasaki has been planning to standardize and benchmark activities across several operations from local assembly, parts procurement up to retail and aftersales services. This is the reason why IKM which is a 100% subsidiary of Japan-based Kawasaki Heavy Industries is building a motorcycle assembly plant in Chakan. When it goes solo, IKM will be able to scale-up its current local operations as well as restructure and expand its team and retail network.

Kawasaki will also have complete control over its operations that range from parts procurement and warehousing to quality checks and aftersales service to its customers. IKM’s Japanese management is working diligently to set up teams for core responsibilities during the expansion of the operations. In due time, IKM will be able to move to its very own plant.

There are no details available regarding proposed investments, annual production target capacities and other critical areas of IKM’s plant in Chakan but the news of a new plant is highly welcome for components suppliers in the community located in the western region of India. IKM’s standalone unit in Chakan is a very big milestone for Kawasaki’s journey in India because it means a solid boost to the fast growing premium motorcycle market.

According to estimations of Autocar professionals, IKM may move to its all-new assembly plant and start operations before the festive season as long as there are no delays and change of plans. IKM’s highest priority is to take care of its customers and this is the reason why there are also plans to increase their network by 30% to 40% this year.
